Derived from the word “robot”, social bots, also known as social networking bots, are designed to imitate human behaviour, especially in social networks such as Facebook and Twitter: These chatbots can crop up as fake accounts or insinuate themselves into a genuine profile and make use of clever algorithms to answer questions, hold conversations, do research online or publish their own tweets or posts. The idea behind social bots is to simulate genuine human presence. The best-known example and evidence of how clever bots have already become is Apple’s Siri.
