A steadily increasing number of mechanical components in railway applications is being replaced or steered and controlled by electronical components. This is the reason why not only the amount of electronical components and systems in railway technology rise, but also their complexity and the mandatory safety requirements.

The international standard IEC 61508 for functional safety and the industry-related inter­pretation of railway technology (CENELEC) is mentioning detailled technical guidelines through which the specifications shall be realized.

The application of standards differ in the procedure used until now in regards to safety technology, because they do not only consider a part of the system in as specific stage of the developmen, but the entire System during the life cycle.
