TÜV NORD-H2-Carbon-Capture-Label: Certification of Hydrogen With Consideration of CCS and CCU
Hydrogen and its derivatives, such as ammonia or methanol, play an important role in the future of global and environmentally friendly energy supply. Sectors such as the chemical and steel industries want to drive their decarbonisation through the use of hydrogen. This is because it can be used as an energy storage medium with a wide range of applications: hydrogen and its derivatives can be used as a fuel or raw material.
However, large-scale production of hydrogen from renewable sources is not yet possible, as is the European Union's objective. To enable industry to switch quickly to this climate-friendly key element, the intermediate technologies CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) and CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilisation) will ensure that hydrogen is produced in sufficient quantities.
The intermediate technologies CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) and CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilisation) are used to produce hydrogen from fossil sources, in particular natural gas. The carbon dioxide (C02) produced in this process is either stored (CCS) or used as a raw material in other processes (CCU). The EU has created the legal framework for this with Directive 2009/31/EC on the geological storage of carbon dioxide and the German government with the Act on the Demonstration of the Permanent Storage of Carbon Dioxide (Carbon Dioxide Storage Act - KSpG).
TÜV NORD CERT has developed a catalogue of criteria for this purpose. Based on this, the TÜV NORD-H2-Carbon-Capture-Label enables objective verification.

Range of Application of the TÜV NORD-H2-Carbon Capture-Label
Manufacturers of hydrogen, hydrogen derivatives and industrial gases, as well as energy suppliers, network operators, transport service providers, importers and exporters of energy, who are committed to the intermediate technologies of CCS and CCU and thus support the energy transition, have the opportunity to demonstrate this with the TÜV NORD-H2-Carbon-Capture-Label. The certificate is valid for three years and is reviewed annually.
The TÜV NORD-H2-Carbon-Capture-Label can be applied for hydrogen or hydrogen derivatives. It also applies to industrial gases generated during the production of hydrogen or required for the production of hydrogen derivatives. In terms of scope, it is possible to choose whether only production or also transport and storage are to be certified. It is also possible to consider multiple product conversion steps.
Advantages of the TÜV NORD-H2-Carbon-Capture-Label
