Verification of Steel Products According to the Low Emission Steel Standard (LESS)
The steel industry plays a crucial role in achieving global climate goals. Its energy-intensive processes, which traditionally rely on coal combustion and result in considerable greenhouse gas emissions, can be transformed through technical innovations, the use of renewable energies, and increased recycling.
Steel producers have already started the first transformation processes. Through verification according to LESS, we offer these companies the opportunity to have their transformation steps independently evaluated based on the specific criteria of the LESS standard.
What is LESS?
LESS is a labelling system for low-carbon footprint steel developed by the German Steel Association. It aims to support the gradual transformation of the German steel industry towards climate neutrality by 2045.
The system is based on a five-stage classification system, that categorises steel products according to the level of carbon emissions during production. The scale ranges from “Low Emissions” down to “Near Zero” for nearly emissions-free steel production. It also considers the proportion of secondary raw materials, such as steel scrap.

For which companies is LESS verification suitable?
The verification is intended for steel producers.
What data are needed for LESS verification?
For verification, we need the emission value, the scrap rate and other relevant production data, among other things. This data forms the basis for the classification of your hot-rolled steel product.
Is LESS applicable to all steel products?
No, the verification only applies to products of hot-rolled steel.
Is PCF verification performed within the framework of LESS verification?
No. Verification of the PCF (Product Carbon Footprint) is not included in LESS verification. PCF verification is a separate service, which TÜV NORD is happy to provide upon request.

How long does the LESS verification process take?
The time required for the verification depends on the quality of the data supplied and any corrections that are needed. Generally, the process lasts a few weeks if all the necessary documentation is provided.
